On Thursday, January 2, 2019, U.S. President Donald J. Trump announced an American air strike occurring outside of Baghdad’s international airport had targeted and killed General Qassam Soleimani, terrorist and head of Iran’s Quds Force. The strike was to prevent Soleimani’s plans for imminent additional attacks following an attack early Tuesday on the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad, Iraq, as well as in retaliation for the deaths of hundreds of Americans at the hands of Soleimani over several decades.
