WASHINGTON, D.C. - Following U.S. Intelligence news today that China intentionally underreported the number of both total cases and deaths from COVID-19 in its country, including a complete lack of reporting over a month before the world knew of the outbreak, Congressman Roger Marshall, M.D., issued the following statement:

“This news is not surprising considering China has not reported any new cases in weeks, as well as the Communist nation’s long history of lying,” said Rep. Marshall. “As Vice President Pence said today, we could be in a much better position right now had China been honest. China’s underreporting has impacted Kansans health, lives, and our economy. The CDC modeling using the numbers China gave us back in January would have never suggested the world crisis we see today. It was not until we saw what was happening in Iran, South Korea, and Italy that the true lethality of this virus was seen. This cost America literally months of preparation time. China must be held accountable. From unfair trade practices hurting our farmers, to stealing our intellectual property - and now covering up the outbreak of a deadly global pandemic, it has long been clear China is intentionally undermining the U.S. I’ve already cosponsored legislation to address our medical supply chain issues because of manufacturing in China as well to prohibit federal agencies from using products or services from the Chinese tech giant Huawei. But we need to develop a long-term strategy to combat China’s efforts to undermine our nation.”
